Key facts about childcare vouchers

There are currently over 600,000 users of childcare vouchers, and the scheme has helped well over a million families to afford high quality childcare since 2005. Over 50,000 employers, employing 15 million people, offer childcare vouchers.

Childcare vouchers operate as a salary sacrifice scheme – parents’ contributions are taken from their salaries before their usual tax and National Insurance contributions are deducted. Vouchers can be used to cover the cost of care for children up to the age of 15 and even to pay for registered childcare including before and after school clubs, certain elements of independent school fees and holiday camps.

Childcare vouchers currently help employers and employees manage the difficult balance between work and childcare, cutting costs for mothers and fathers and allowing them the flexibility they need.
